As virtualization abstracted the physical infrastructure from the applications in the compute and storage spaces, these industries experienced faster innovation cycles, reduced management complexity and more agile service delivery. We believe software-defined networks will deliver similar transformational benefits to the networking world.

Abstracting the underlying physical network into a set of logical components opens the doors to unprecedented flexibility. IT leaders are now able to solve business problems in a simple, dynamic and controlled way, dealing with the network logical view instead of their complex physical topology. Capacity can also be added to the infrastructure without impacting the logical configurations. A shared physical infrastructure can be virtualized and segmented into entities with different business purposes without requiring any change to the underlying physical topology. At Big Switch Networks, we believe that openness gives customers choice to build best-of-breed networks. Our solution is based on an open standard, OpenFlow, that abstracts the network control plane from the data plane. To give back to open-source communities, a subset of our solutions is also available in an open-source version at www.openflowhub.org. We support a broad variety of network deployments and interoperate with a large ecosystem of partners, allowing customers to freely select best-in class technologies and leverage their existing infrastructure.

Based in Silicon Valley, the Big Switch Networks team is composed of industry experts in virtualization and networking, serial entrepreneurs, and researchers from Stanford University who were early pioneers of Software-Defined Networking and OpenFlow.
