Interop Las Vegas

Big Switch CTO Rob Sherwood was a guest at Packet Pushers' Future of Networking Summit on May 2. They discussed Network Complexity Vs. Automation: How To Handle Containers, NFV & IoT.

Just as virtual machines fundamentally changed how we manage data center networks, new technologies such as containers, Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), Internet of Things (IoT) will likely be forced on network administrators, making their lives more interesting and their networks more complicated.

To combat these complexities, network administrators have an increasing variety of tools to automatically manage, monitor, and debug their networks. In this talk, Rob provided concrete examples of the required network changes needed to deploy these new technologies, and shared examples of how automation can simplify these tasks. Rob used open source and free software to elucidate these points.

OpenStack Summit Austin

What a successful and exciting week at OpenStack Summit Austin! The Big Switch team took the stage in four different OpenStack Summit Austin sessions - we shared experiences from three different enterprise-scale data centers, deployment lessons from a Tier-1 Service Carrier and details on "Open Pod" architecture. If you missed out, follow the links below and watch our presentations on-demand.

OpenStack + Open Compute Project == Best of Breed Clouds

Abstract: The Open Compute Project (OCP) is working towards the open source equivalent of data center hardware including racks, servers, switches, and storage. Specifically, they have created and published free-to-use hardware designs and an ecosystem of hardware partners that product the reference designs. Attendees learned about the details of an "Open Pod" architecture -- an OpenStack Pod on OCP Infrastructure.

Designing for NFV: Lessons Learned from Deploying at Verizon

Abstract: Analysts predict NFV hardware and software to be a $10+B market by 2018, yet few organizations have experience deploying NFV infrastructure at a large scale. This session discussed lessons learned and the development that resulted as part of a specific large-scale NFV infrastructure roll-out that started in 2015. We shared the OpenStack pod design for NFV that emerged after multiple iterations between Red Hat, Big Switch and Dell. The solution is being deployed nationally across Verizon's data centers for NFV workloads while being adapted for their central offices and mobile service centers.

Neutron Networking in the Real World -- Sharing Experiences & Lessons Learnt

Abstract: In this user panel, we will discuss the OpenStack network deployment experiences of three different enterprise-scale data centers using a Unified Physical + Virtual Neutron Networking architecture including Clemson University, Telus and CleanSafeCloud.

Deploying Application Infrastructure on OpenStack

Abstract: This hands-on workshop introduced a set of tools for automating infrastructure deployment, network troubleshooting, and traffic monitoring on OpenStack clouds. Members of the audience were provided access to their own dedicated OpenStack environment.
