We’re excited to share that Erik Papir has been appointed VP of WW Systems Engineering & Technical Sales at Big Switch.

Erik brings to Big Switch more than 25 years of experience in the networking and telecommunications industries, as well as extensive experience leading global technical organizations.

Erik’s own words, on why he has joined us on our journey:

My entire networking career I have competed against Cisco. I have always sought roles at companies where the solutions and my team’s work would challenge the status quo in our industry. Big Switch, with its Cloud-First Networking portfolio, is no different.

As the digital economy grows exponentially, there is a shift happening in networking, and there is no vendor in this space that is better positioned to support this shift. Our growing digital economy demands uncomplicated networking solutions that deliver an as-a-Service experience. By taking the VPC construct and extending it into the Big Switch product portfolio, it was clear to me just how innovative and progressive Big Switch is, and how it is completely in-tune with the shift happening in networking.

From a data center and cloud perspective, what Big Switch is doing, how it is challenging traditional networking, networking methods and a traditional way of thinking, is 10x more exciting and far more disruptive than what the networking incumbents have ever done.

Culture was a big consideration for me when I started looking for my next role. During the course of my career, I have not seen a company of this size with an engineering team that has built such a solid product portfolio, and has such a responsive support organization, or such a committed SE organization, and an aligned leadership team. The people that make up Team Big Switch are all-stars across the board.

Typically, in the Valley, startups are looking for their first product, their first dollar, and their first customer. This is all so untrue of Big Switch, it is beyond all of its ‘firsts’ – with two full product suites developed and shipping, and the logos we count as customers, which are a dream for any company, speak volumes about the capabilities of this collective team as well as the market response and fit.

I have extensive experience helping technical teams scale as the organization grows. I am excited by the opportunity to grow the SE organization, and to enhance the SE job architecture and SE career path. The SE organization is made up of incredibly talented individuals, who I look forward to working closely with, and helping them achieve their professional goals.

Prior to Big Switch, Erik…

Prior to joining Big Switch, Erik led the WW Systems Engineering organization at Ruckus Networks. He started at Brocade which was then acquired by Broadcom, ARRIS and finally CommScope. Erik helped keep the team of over 200 SEs focused and kept attrition at record lows through multiple acquisitions in a very short timeframe. Prior to Ruckus, Erik had a long tenure at 3Com/HP where he started as an SE and quickly moved into management. He held various sales management & technical management positions of increasing responsibility, including leading Network Consultant/SE organizations, a global Solutions Architecture organization, as well as the global Technical Marketing Engineering (TME) & Competitive Intelligence organizations. Erik was tapped by the President of 3Com to lead the entire technical due diligence project for 3Com which resulted in the $3B HP acquisition.
