This spring, we announced an aggressive plan to add open-source thin switching to our Open SDN product suite. We said we would extend and package the Indigo project commercially to enable a thin-switching platform for OpenFlow networks. We said we would open-source the latest innovations to Indigo Virtual Switch (IVS), which we deliver commercially as Switch Light for Linux. Along the way, we... Read more

The sky is falling. The Earth is flat. OpenFlow is not robust. OpenFlow is a toy. OpenFlow is not deployable at large scale. All these charges (well maybe not the first two) are being leveled by incumbent networking hardware vendors desperately trying to slow down OpenFlow adoption, while they figure out how to continue extracting the same obscene margins from their customers. At the Open... Contribution includes code from wildly popular Floodlight controller project and significant elements of Big Switch Networks Open SDN SuiteLast week, Big Switch Networks’ proposed controller code contribution to the OpenDaylight Project was added as a bootstrap project under the name “Open SDN Controller Platform” (OpenDaylight Project wiki). This is an important first step in the merit-based... Read more

OpenStack Networking @ Havana Summit, Portland, April 2013Last week, I attended the OpenStack Summit in Portland, Oregon and was extremely encouraged by many things: that the conference doubled in size since last year, the successful release of Grizzly, and by some really significant progress made with regard to network services by a diverse group of us network types.  Here are my takeaways... Unless you were under a rock, you could not have helped but notice that the OpenDaylight SDN consortium project officially launched today after months of leaks and lots of speculation about what it is and is not, who is in and who is not, and what ultimately will be the benefit, if any, to end users. The broad embrace by the incumbent IT vendor community is an enormous validation of the Open SDN... Read more

The Colts season has ended and the Indy 500 is months away, but teams are heading to Indianapolis this week for the inCNTRE Plugfest Feb 19-21. The Indiana Center for Network Translational Research and Education (InCNTRE) at Indiana University selected the generally available Big Network Controller for this first test with equipment from SDN switch vendors Dell, Extreme Networks, HP, IBM and NEC... Four years ago, we realized that traditional approaches to designing and building network infrastructure were no longer sustainable. We teamed up with some very sophisticated users who shared their challenges and a vision for an open and standards-based software-defined networking platform. With no installed base or legacy business to preserve, Big Switch had the luxury of starting with a clean... Read more

In the last week, there was some discussion about whether OpenFlow for physical switches matters for the data center. If some are to believe OpenFlow control for hardware switches is not only a bad idea, but also against the interest of users as well as switch vendors. http://bit.ly/TWQyus If you feel confused, you are not alone. Over the past year, at Big Switch, we... Over the last 20 years, generations of networking startups have been spawned to address the inherent shortcomings of L2 and L3 networking architectures. It’s not that Ethernet and TCP/IP are broken, rather that they were invented in a time (1960’s & 70s) when the demands on the network were dramatically less complex than today.  If you look back, you can see this trend very clearly.... It's that time of year again - A chance to look back at what happened in 2012 and prognosticate a bit for 2013.2012 definitely will be rememebered as the year that defined Software-Defined Networking (SDN) from the ecosystem perspective as well as from the customer perspective.  Several SDN companies launched, including Big Switch Networks. The space even saw M&A with VMWare, Brocade,... Read more
