Delivering Resilient SDN Fabrics For OpenStack NFV Clouds with Advanced Visibility

NFV deployments represent some of the most demanding workloads in OpenStack clouds, yet the economic and operational promise of NFV makes this a high-value technical challenge for service providers worldwide. In this Intel Builders Network webinar, we discuss a joint solution based on Big Switch’s SDN Fabrics (for cloud and for visibility) and Red Hat OpenStack Platform 7 for a large NFV deployment at tier-1 US telecom provider.  For deploying OpenStack cloud for NFV, the following key design principles are discussed:

Additionally, pervasive visibility of NFV environment is critical due to east-west traffic across NFV workloads and increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks.  Big Switch’s Big Monitoring Fabric enables advanced visibility and security to the OpenStack NFV cloud. Specifically, we discussed:

  • Out-of-band and inline SDN fabrics for visibility and service chaining
  • Intel DPDK-based service node for advanced services such as De-deduplication, Packet Slicing, and RegEx Pattern Matching
  • Dynamic policy creation through event triggered API integration
